Dark, cold, and whipped by supersonic winds, the ice giant Neptune is the eighth and most distant major planet in our solar system. Neptune is the only planet not visible to the naked eye. It was the first planet discovered not through a telescope but through mathematical calculations. Based on the predictions of Urbain Le Verrier, Johann Galle discovered the planet in 1846. In 2011, Neptune completed its first 165-year orbit since its initial discovery. With a radius of 24,622 kilometers, Neptune is about four times the size of Earth. A day on Neptune lasts about 16 hours. Neptune completes one complete orbit around the Sun (one year in Neptunian time) in about 165 Earth years (60,190 Earth days). Neptune has 14 known moons. Neptune's largest moon, Triton, was discovered by William Lassell on October 10, 1846, just 17 days after the planet's discovery by Johann Galle.
