Jonas Schroeder cultivated an eye for the extraordinary and an unbiased, open mindset as a successful manager – as a career changer and autodidact, he made both the basis of his own company in 2012.

In collaboration with a network of specialized German manufacturers, his label joval has since produced high-quality furniture that always follows the analytical-mathematical design approach and must be functionally and constructively innovative. And they are.

Who are you?

My name is Jonas Schroeder, I am in my mid-30s and a passionate entrepreneur and water sports enthusiast.

City of Design – Describe your favorite design city.

Munich – a wonderfully beautiful city with endless possibilities.

What inspires you?

The aesthetics of mathematical proportions.

How can one imagine your studio/workshop?

We have a beautiful showroom on Nymphenburger Strasse – Munich’s “furniture mile”. The best thing to do is just drop by and visit us.

Tell us something about your professional career.

After studying law and economics and gaining a wide range of professional experience in Montreal, New York, Chicago, Madrid and Hamburg, I decided to found the furniture brand joval. After an initial successful test of my products at the blickfang Stuttgart 2013, the foundation was laid to build a professional furniture brand.

Have you received any design awards? If so, which ones and for which products?

The foldable shelving system REBAR was awarded the “Interior Innovation Award 2014 – Best of Best” by the German Design Council in 2014 and the foldable trestle HELIOS was awarded the “Iconic Award 2016 – Interior Innovation”.

Who is your role model?

I am fascinated by designs from the Bauhaus era.

What makes your products so special?

Since I am not a trained designer, I take a mathematical approach to design. This means that the designs are always derived from mathematical relationships and shapes. I leave nothing to chance. The shape of our successful PLEKTRON table is the fusion of triangle and circle, and the leg elements are a derivative of this three-round table top shape.

What is the best way to care for your product(s)? Is there anything you should keep in mind?

Basically, the same applies to joval products as to all furniture: you should be careful not to scratch the surfaces with sharp objects and it is best to remove dust and dirt with a damp microfiber cloth, perhaps with a little washing-up liquid. Aggressive cleaning agents or solvents should not be used as they can damage the surface.

What is your favorite object and accompanies you every day?

My bicycle.
